ASVAB, the military enlistment test, is used to determine if an individual is qualified to enlist in the military.

ASVAB scores also help determine which Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) qualifies for, so scoring higher means having more choices of jobs within the military. Among the ten areas tested, four are considered most important: Paragraph Comprehension, Word Knowledge, Math Knowledge, and Arithmetic Reasoning. Together, these form the prospective enlistee’s AFQT score, which in most cases must be a minimum of 31 to be considered for enlistment.

Both SAT and TSI are content-based tests covering analytical reading, math, grammar & usage, and writing.

However, the purpose for taking each test is different. SAT scores are used for admissions and merit-based scholarships to colleges and universities throughout the United States while TSI scores are used specifically by public colleges and universities in the state of Texas to determine if students must first take developmental English or Math courses. All Texas public colleges and universities require students to meet TSI thresholds before placement into college-level English or Math courses.

The integrated format presents an appreciable challenge to test takers. However, a sufficient score on TOEFL offers great rewards. According to a survey by ETS, the company that makes TOEFL, more than 90% of the respondents who took the test got into their 1st- or 2nd-choice university.

Students in English Conversation classes can choose from two instructional formats: small teacher-led group instruction or individualized instruction.

In a small teacher-led group, the teacher can effectively guide discussion and extension activities to meet specific needs of the group and reinforce content from previous classes. The size of the group is small, so the teacher has more time to check for accuracy and understanding, and the students have more time to interact with the teacher, the materials, and one another.

Individualized instruction is ideal for learners who learn best in a one-to-one, teacher-to-student ratio. This type of instruction caters to the individual student’s needs. The content and feel of the class are completely personalized, and help can most easily be given in this scenario.
